Summer Institute for Rural Schools

The Summer Institute for Rural Schools brings together educators, students, parents, and Cornell faculty and experts in the field of education to improve the achievement of rural students through shared knowledge. With the theme, "Preparing Rural Youth for the Future," the conference is designed to address issues facing rural districts; especially improving achievement levels overall and enabling/encouraging graduates to enroll in Cornell and other selective institutions.

More Information

Through several plenary sessions, participating 5-member school district teams will work in groups to identify issues relating to rural education. Each team will give a presentation to communicate distinctive challenges and successes in their school's and community's efforts to prepare students for the future. Collaborating with faculty members and experts in the field of education, participating school teams will identify ideas and resources for improving concerns and possible solutions for immediate action.

The Institute is designed to initiate a dialog between Cornell University and the people responsible for rural schools in New York State, and to create lasting networks leading to continued communication and collaboration. Cornell hopes to learn more about how its resources can best be shared to support rural schools, and additional collaborative activities will be planned and conducted.
